All about EmJay Music

EmJay Music started in 1985 as a small shop specialising in organs and keyboards; in 1986 we (that is Mick Leary, his partner and one-time pupil Carol Parsons, and their Old English Sheepdog 'Solo') moved into a lovely converted farm building at Blackboys, in East Sussex. Among the items stocked were instruments by Lowrey, Farfisa, Orla, Elka, Viscount and Casio. Roland pianos joined the stock after a year or two. We became particularly well known for our huge display of sheet music and accessories. The business grew rapidy, so in 1991 we moved a few miles down the road to the village of Horam (near the Merrydown Cider Factory - hic!) where we had four times the space, which we grew into very rapidly. We had three very happy and busy years there, meeting many new customers too.

However, we wanted home and business under one roof, so in 1994, we moved into a delightful old shop and house at Herstmonceux, near Hailsham, where the showroom was spacious, and full of character, including a lovely beamed ceiling. In the ten years we stayed there, we took on the Hammond organ agency and Yamaha keyboards, and embraced selling on the Internet too. We lost our beloved 'Solo' at 13 years old while we were there, only to be joined soon afterwards by another Old English Sheepdog named 'Doris', who became an instant hit with our customers! However, several holidays to North Norfolk, well away from the bustle and overcrowding of East Sussex, made us think we should move the 180 miles to the small village of Briston, not far from Holt, and only four miles from the Thursford Collection, with its Wurlitzer, Fairground organs, Carousels and Traction Engines, and the most amazing Christmas Show in the country!

So, in 2004, we moved lock stock and barrel up the M25 and M11 to the laid back countryside and wonderful beaches of North Norfolk - and have loved every minute of it. We no longer have a showroom, but we sell at local promotions, on the Internet, and at the now famous Briston Organ Shows that we present in our village about eight times each year to packed houses! Mick still teaches locally, and plays his Hammond, Yamaha keyboard, and his new Casio digital piano at various local functions.

We unfortunately lost our beloved 'Doris' in early 2014, but now have a delightful young Cockapoo named 'Gladys' who is very lively, but very affectionate, and already a great favourite of our customers and friends
